Research Communication Skills
3MT® – Three Minute Thesis research communication
The 3MT® is a global academic contest of skills and expertise in the arena of science communication. Participants will have only three minutes to bring the quintessence of their research across to a general audience.
Step 1: Prep-workshop
To prepare for the 3MT® competition at UZH, participate in the workshop and get ready with the support of our coach Michael Berndonner.

Date | 3MT Training on 8 September | 9:00 - 17:30 Those participating in both the 3MT Training and the 3MT Competition on 22 September will receive 1 ECTS credit as part of the Graduate Campus Transferable Skills course program. |
Step 2: Competition within UZH
The U21 3MT® pits leading presenters from U21 member universities against one another. Each participating member will hold their own internal 3MT® competition to select a local winner who will then be put forward for the U21 final, to be judged by an international panel consisting of industry and academic professionals.

Award | Jury Awards: 700 CHF first place, 500 CHF runner-up Audience Award: 300 CHF The best presentation (1st place, Jury Award) will go on to compete in the global U21 3MT® Competition as a video submission in October 2025. |

Guidelines & rules: 3MT presentation
- Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
- Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
- Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
- A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or movement) and is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
- No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
- No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
- The decision of the 3MT jury is final.
