A global contest in science communication, the 3MT® was founded by theUniversity of Queensland. Winners from local contests compete in the global Universitas 21 (U21) virtual final in October.
Participants will have only three minutes to bring the quintessence of their research across to a general audience.
3MT Competition at UZH – 22 September 2025
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) challenges PhD candidates to present their research in just three minutes to a non-specialist audience. Local contests lead to the U21 virtual final in October, showcasing global talent and storytelling.

Awards | Jury Awards: 700 CHF first place, 500 CHF runner-up Audience Award: 300 CHF The best presentation (1st place, Jury Award) will go on to compete in the global U21 3MT® Competition as a video submission in October 2025. |
ECTS | Those participating in both the 3MT Training on 8 September and the 3MT Competition on 22 September will receive 1 ECTS credit as part of the Graduate Campus Transferable Skills course program. |

3MT guidelines & rules
- Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
- Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
- Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
- A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or movement) and is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
- No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
- No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
- The decision of the 3MT jury is final.
